Berkeley Space Center Faculty Steering Committee Report

Berkeley Space Center Faculty Steering Committee Report

In the decades to come, the Berkeley Space Center will create unprecedented opportunities for UC Berkeley, with effects comparable to the impact Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory had on the campus.

In the first phase of the project, Phase I (2023-2028), the site will be in construction. The research activities at the Berkeley Space Center (and on campus) will be organized around clusters, focused on specific themes, involving NASA, UC Berkeley, industry and Berkeley Space Center stakeholders. In parallel, UC Berkeley will establish instructional activities on site, extending its teaching portfolio to Berkeley Space Center, including certificate, professional, and degree-granting programs. While these research and teaching activities grow, the increasing presence of faculty, staff and students at the Berkeley Space Center will enable a deepening of the connection with NASA. The frequency and intensity of events, symposia, and activities to be conducted jointly with NASA and Berkeley Space Center stakeholders will accelerate from an already existing sound base to a vibrant ecosystem.

As the activities continue to grow, solutions to the transportation (and housing) problem will enable presence at the Berkeley Space Center to become more sustainable, in preparation for the opening, Phase II (2028 and beyond). Upon opening, the presence of private sector companies with research interests aligned with ours will enable a full launch of the research and teaching portfolio on site and the emergence of industry consortia to fund research sustainably. These consortia will enable the growth of joint activities between UC Berkeley, NASA and Berkeley Space Center private sector stakeholders. With thousands of engineers, scientists and staff from dozens of companies at our side when the site reaches capacity, a full transportation solution (based on wi-fi connected buses) will be put in place, similar to other Silicon Valley campuses nearby, enabling productive commuting when needed.
